the adventures of backpack bunny
In April 2023, I went to Chicago for a weekend Spring Break trip. Me, my mom, and my sister were moseying in and out of the hotel lobby shops, waiting for the Uber.
It was that fateful day we stumbled into that cozy gift shop, filled to the brim with books, mugs, and Jellycats. (If you're unfamiliar, they are the cutest, softest, most overpriced stuffed animals cholk full of the most personality and charisma you will ever see. Seriously, google it.)
And that was where we met her for the first time. Backpack Bunny. Her silky soft fur, those ears that stick straight up. Her darling little bunny teeth. And flip her around, and she's sporting a mini pink backpack in her resemblance. She would have been the perfect impulse buy any other time of the year. But after spending 30 dollars on a pizza the night before, we decided to show some self-control. Big mistake. We thought about her every day after that.
And in August, we decided it had been far too long without her pink bunny backpack that opens and literally fit a ChapStick inside. We ordered her off the Jellycat website, to which my mom's card got put on hold under fraudulent suspicion. What are you talking about, LMCU? It's perfectly normal to spend 38 dollars on a plush bunny shipped from England.
And after her week and a half voyage across the Atlantic, she made it home.
Welcome home Backpack Bunny!
My mom and I have a little bit of a problem with her. To us, she is a real, animate bunny/person, but also synonymous with me. Many of my mom's text messages start out with "How is backpack bunny today?" to which I reply, "sleepy" or "she doesn't want to go to class," or "she needs a hug."
And one day this fall, while out shopping, I found Backpack Bunny's siblings. There was a Backpack Dinosaur, and Backpack Elephant. And believe it or not, I have two siblings myself. It was meant to be. 64 dollars and a slight case of buyer's remorse later -- Backpack Bunny had two new friends.
Backpack Brontosaurus and Backpack Elephant! (Alliteration can only go so far)
On a weekend I left Backpack Bunny at home. We were separated for a whole week. </3 But not to worry, because Backpack Bunny got to spend time with my mom. She sent me snapshots of all the adventures her and Backpack Bunny went on while we were apart. The joy I felt at seeing each one pop up on my phone was unmatched.
So, here's some of those pictures for your enjoyment:)
(But mostly my mom and I's. Hi mom I know you're reading this.)
"Can I stay home today?" :(
"Please don't hurt me. I've seen you what you do to the rabbits in the backyard."
Yay Christmas village! (It's her first Christmas)
"I'm not even one year old and already being introduced to the joy that is corporate America."
"I knew a turtle once"
She needed another Jellycat friend. College is lonely.
Enjoying a cookie from Grandma.
Do you see the resemblance? No? Just me?
I have a lot more pictures where these came from if you ever want to see more ;). This post is basically the equivalent of a mom asking if you want to see pictures of her newborn (you didn't ask, and its head looks like a potato. Oxytocin is a wonderous thing.) But Backpack Bunny is much cuter than a newborn if you ask me. Thanks for sticking around if you made it this far:)
